CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

1/5/01 - The Center for Coastal Studies(CCS) and MA DMF conducted an aerial survey of Cape Cod Bay today with 8 right whales sighted. They completed 14 of the 15 track lines in the Bay and the additional track line about 2 miles off the outside of the Cape.

1/8/01 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater was out conducting right whale habitat studies in the Bay. A total of 10 right whales were sighted.

1/13/01 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team did a complete survey of Cape Cod Bay and the track line approx. 2 n. miles off the east side of the Cape (Chatham - Provincetown). The CCS R/V Shearwater did a habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 8 right whales were observed subsurface feeding.

1/16/01 - The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) R/V Shearwater observed 4 right whales today as they were transitting the Bay for maintenance. This was not a dedicated survey. As such, this is considered an opportunistic sighting that may not necessarily represent all whales present in the Bay.

1/23/01 - The Center for Coastal Studies (MA/CCS) Aerial Survey Team and (CCS) R/V Shearwater reported sighting 7 right whales in Cape Cod Bay today.

1/24/01 - The Center for Coastal Studies (MA/CCS) Aerial Survey Team conducted an aerial survey today, flying all track lines in Cape Cod Bay. The (CCS) R/V Shearwater was also out today. A total of 6 right whales were reported sighted.

1/29/01 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and one track line approximately 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. The CCS R/V did a habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 7 right whales were observed south/southwest of Provincetown. 1/30/01 - The CCS R/V Shearwater reported sighting 3 right whales in the vicinity of Wood End and Provincetown Harbor while conducting a Bay Monitoring Trip in Cape Cod Bay today.

1/31/01 - The Center for Coastal Studies reported a land based sighting of 2 right whales in Cape Cod Bay off the Wood End section of Provincetown.
