CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

3/2/01 - The CCS R/V Shearwater team reported sighting 2 right whales in the central portion of Cape Cod Bay while conducting a Bay Monitoring Survey.

3/8/01 - The CCS R/V Shearwater team conducted a Bay Monitoring Survey in Cape Cod Bay with 11 right whales sighted.

3/12/01 - A dredge vessel reported sighting a right whale mother and calf pair in the vicinity of Frying Pan Shoals east of the mouth of the Cape Fear River off Cape Fear, North Carolina. A total of 2 right whales sighted.

3/13/01 - A dredge vessel reported sighting two right whales(probable mother/calf pair) southeast of the mouth of the Cape Fear River off Cape Fear, North Carolina. A total of 2 right whales sighted.

3/15/01 - The CCS ship survey team conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay with 20 right whales sighted.

NOTE: The Int'l Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Cornell University placed 5 passive acoustic buoys in Cape Cod Bay approximately 1 week ago as part of an ongoing research project to study acoustic right whale detection with the buoys.

3/16/01 - The CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay with a total of 11 right whales south of Provincetown and west of Wellfleet.

3/17/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team partially surveyed Cape Cod Bay (CCB)with 26 right whales sighted in the northern part of the Bay & east of the Cape.One CCB right whale was entangled(same animal sighted ent.in early Feb) and disentanglement was attempted. A dead juvenile right whale was found on Assateague Island,VA. The responders reported wounds consistent with prop marks. NOTE: 2 right whales have been observed over the last week in the NY Lanes off Long Branch, NJ. Mariners should exercise caution.

3/18/01 - Two shore-based sightings from the Center for Coastal Studies reported 13 right whales off the Race Point and Herring Cove areas of Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay.

3/20/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay; the CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey on the southern part of Stellwagen, north of Provincetown. The NMFS aerial team surveyed Wildcat Knoll and south of Nantucket. A total of 30 right whales were sighted with many of the Stellwagen whales in proximity of the outbound Boston traffic lanes.

3/21/01 - A whale watch reported sighting 4 right whales off the North River area of Marshfield in Massachusetts Bay.

3/26/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the CCS vessel team did a habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 9 right whales were observed including a mother and calf pair.

3/29/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed the southern part of Stellwagen and the northern part of Cape Cod Bay; the CCS ship teams conducted habitat & biopsy surveys in the Bay until the ent. whale was re-sighted. The ent. whale was satellite tagged & some line removed.The NMFS aerial teams surveyed Cashes Ledge & the Great South Channel.A total of 30 right whales(inc. a mother & calf pair) were observed from all areas.
