CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

Reports:

4/1/01 - The NMFS aerial team surveyed Block Island Sound area and attempted to survey north of Provincetown until sea and snow conditions picked up. Four right whales were sighted in transit to the Provincetown area.

4/4/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the CCS ship team did a Bay monitoring cruise.There were 26 right whales observed in the Bay with 2 and a possible 3rd mother & calf pair observed. The NMFS aerial team surveyed the Great South Channel with 22 right whales sighted in the Channel. Right whales in the Channel were in and east of the Traffic Lanes. TOTAL RWs for the day: 48

4/5/01 - The CCS ship teams conducted habitat and photo identification surveys in Cape Cod Bay with 6 right whales observed including 2 mother & calf pairs. The NMFS aerial teams surveyed Fippennies & Cashes Ledges and off northern New Jersey, Long Island & in Block Island Sound w/ no right whales sighted. A fishing vessel reported sighting 2 right whales in the NY Traffic Lanes off the Asbury Park, NJ area. TOTAL RWs for day:8

4/6/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 15 right whales including 3 mother & calf pairs were observed. The NMFS aerial team surveyed in the southern part of the Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for the day:15

4/8/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting a mother & calf pair of right whales in the Boston Traffic Lanes in the vicinity of the B buoy on Stellwagen Bank. Mariners are urged to proceed in and out of Boston with caution and to post lookouts.

4/9/01 - The CCS Ship Shearwater conducted a Habitat Survey in Cape Cod Bay today. There was also a opportunistic sighting reported by MWRA. A total of 10 right whales were reported sighted in the central portion and off Manomet in Cape Cod Bay.

4/10/01 - The CCS Aerial Team conducted a survey in Cape Cod Bay. Right whales were reported sighted just North of the Cape Cod Canal in the shipping lane and in the central portion of Cape Cod Bay. There was also sightings reported by the Song of the Whale. A Total of 26 Right Whales were sighted.

4/11/01 - CCS Aerial Team flew 16 tracklines and CCS Ship conducted a Habitat Survey in CCB. 21 Right whales were reported sighted in the central portion of Cape Cod Bay including five mother calf pairs (two pairs may be possible duplicates). The NMFS flew in the Great South Channel. 11 Right whales were sighted in the Channel, in and to the east and west of the Traffic Lanes.

4/12/01 - The entangled right whale that has been sighted several times this season and was satellite tagged during a disentanglement effort has traveled extensively. Presently, this right whale is east of the Right Whale Critical Habitat and just north of Cultivator Shoal in the Great South Channel.

4/13 01 - The tagged entangled right whale moved into the northeast corner of the Great South Channel Critical Habitat. NOTE: Cape Cod Bay Advisory & map attached.

Concentrations of northern right whales are currently seen in the southwestern portion of Cape Cod Bay. They are feeding at -- or just below -- the surface and are difficult to see, thus increasing the risk of collisions with vessels. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is asking all mariners in the southwestern portion of the Bay within fifteen nautical miles from the Cape Cod Canal (SEE MAP) to take the following precautions:
  • Reduce speed to 15 knots, or slower if visibility is poor.
  • Post an observer and be on alert.
  • Operators are reminded that approaching right whales within 500 yards is a violation of state and federal regulation.
  • 4/14/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting 3 right whales off the Wood End section of Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay. This sighting included a mother & calf pair. The tagged entangled right whale has moved westerly to the north central section of the Great South Channel Critical Habitat. NOTE: The state's right whale advisory for Cape Cod Bay remains in effect.

    4/15/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting 2-3 right whales south of Race Point off Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay. The tagged entangled right whale continued to move westerly across the Boston Traffic Lanes to just west of the lanes in the Great South Channel.

    4/16/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the backside of Cape Cod. The CCS R/V conducted a survey in the Bay. The MA Environmental Police & Coast Guard and 2 whale watch vessels reported multiple right whale sightings around the Provincetown area.The NMFS aerial team conducted a partial survey in the Great South Channel. The tagged entangled whale was sighted in the Traffic Lanes off Chatham. TOTAL RWs for day:23

    4/17/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and reported sightings in the western and central portions of Cape Cod Bay. A whale watch vessel also reported right whale sightings around the Provincetown area. NMFS aerial team conducted a partial survey in the Great South Channel and the tagged entangled whale was sighted to the east of the Traffic Lane, SE of Chatham. TOTAL RWs for day:30

    4/18/01 - The latest position for the tagged entangled right whale was in the northwest corner of the Great South Channel to the west of the Traffic Lanes.

    4/19/01 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 3 right whales at the east end of Cape Cod Canal in Cape Cod Bay. TOTAL RWs: 3

    4/20/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the backside of Cape Cod. The NMFS aerial team conducted a partial survey in and north and west of the Great South Channel. The tagged entangled whale was moving east across northern Jeffreys Ledge. TOTAL RWs for day:23 (Including 3 mother/calf pairs)

    4/21/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting a right whale in the Boston Traffic Lanes on the southeast corner of Stellwagen Bank.

    4/22/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting 2 right whales (possible mother & calf pair) near the BE buoy in the Boston Traffic Lanes on Stellwagen Bank. A second whale watch vessel reported sighting a right whale off the Wood End section of Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay. The satellite tag report for the tagged entangled right whale moved easterly to southwest of Rodgers Swell & north of the Great South Channel.

    4/23/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay & along the outside of the Cape. The CCS ship conducted a habitat survey in the Bay. A whale watch vessel and a shore based right whale sighting were reported from the Bay. The NMFS aerial teams surveyed GSC and the southeast part of Georges & south of Nantucket. A total of 26 right whales were sighted.
    The satellite tagged whale moved to the northern edge of Georges Bank.

    4/24/01 - The satellite tagged entangled right whale moved north easterly along the northern edge of Georges Bank.

    4/25/01 - A whale watch vessel reported a sighting of a mother & calf pair just outside of Cape Cod Bay on the back side of Provincetown & south of the Boston Traffic Lanes.

    The satellite tagged whale continues to move around the northern edge of Georges Bank crossing back & forth between the 50 & 100 fathom contours.

    NOTE - Cape Cod Bay Advisory: Sightings of northern right whales feeding in Cape Cod Bay are no longer aggregated in the southwestern portion of the Bay. Consequently, the state Advisory issued for this area two weeks ago has been lifted until further notice.

    4/26/01 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting a single right whale south of Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay.

    The tagged entangled right whale moved in a southwesterly direction back into the Great South Channel.

    4/27/01 - Whale watch vessels reported sighting right whales near Provincetown Harbor and south of Provincetown in Cape Cod Bay. These sightings included 4 mother pairs with possible duplicate sightings.

    The tagged entangled right whale is in the central portion of the Great South Channel. A total of 15 right whales were sighted.

    4/29/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the back side of the Cape with 18 right whales sighted. The NMFS aerial team surveyed in the Great South Channel. The entangled satellite tagged right whale remains in the south central section of the Channel east of the Traffic Lanes. TOTAL RWs for day:19

    4/30/01 - The NMFS aerial survey team surveyed the Sharrer Ridge & Rodgers Swell areas. A whale watch vessel reported right whale sightings off Provincetown. The Int'l Fund for Animal Welfare's (IFAW) R/V did a ship survey in the Great South Channel and located the tagged entangled right whale. TOTAL RWs for day:21 (including 4 mother & calf pairs)
