CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

Reports:

5/1/01 - MA/CCS completed an aerial survey in and on the backside of Cape Cod Bay. The Coast Guard and a whale watch vessel reported 4 right whales/2 mother calf pairs. NMFS Aerial Survey flew track lines in Great South Channel and reported 17 right whales including 1 mother/calf pair. Tagged entangled right whale was in the SE section of Great South Channel. TOTAL RW's for day: 24

5/2/01 - The NMFS aerial teams surveyed Wilkinson Basin & the southern part of Georges Bank. The CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay. A whale watch vessel reported a single right whale off Provincetown. The tagged entangled whale was last reported along the 50 fathom edge east of the Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for day:8 (including 2 mother&calf pairs)

5/3/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed the back side of the Cape, Stellwagen Basin and Wildcat Knoll. The NMFS aerial team surveyed the Great South Channel. The tagged entangled whale has moved east along the 50 fathom edge to east of the Critical Habitat. TOTAL RWs for day: 5

5/4/01 - The CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay with no right whale sightings. The tagged entangled whale remains east of the Great South Channel Critical Habitat along the 50 fathom edge.

5/8/01 - The NMFS aerial teams surveyed the middle & southern portion of the Great South Channel. The CCS ship team conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay. The Coast Guard reported a sighting in the Gulf of Maine west of Wilkinson Basin. The satellite tag which was attached to the gear trailing the entangled whale has been located without the whale, damaged and with ~90ft of line attached. TOTAL RWs for the day:35 (inc. 3 mother & calf pairs)

5/9/01 - The NMFS aerial team surveyed in the Wilkinson Basin to Sharrer's Ridge area and the northern part of the Great South Channel. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) R/V surveyed in the Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for day:13 (including 2 mother & calf pairs)

5/10/01 - The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) conducted a ship survey in the Great South Channel with 5 right whales sighted.

5/11/01 - The MA/CCS aerial team surveyed the northern part of the Great South Channel and NMFS surveyed in the Gulf of Maine. Right whales were sighted outside and inside the Northeast portion of the Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for day:18

5/12/01 - The NMFS aerial team surveyed in the Great South Channel with 15 right whales sighted.

5/17/01 - The NMFS aerial teams surveyed in the Gulf of Maine, Jeffreys Bank,Wilkinson Basin closure area and the northern part of the Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for day:4 (including 1 mother & calf pair)

5/18/01 - The NMFS aerial teams surveyed the northern edge of Georges Bank and the Great South Channel. A total of 40 right whales was observed including 2 mother & calf pairs.

5/25/01 - The NMFS aerial teams surveyed the Wilkinson Basin closure area, and Cashes & Fippennies Ledges out to the US/Canadian Hague line with 1 right whale sighted east of Cape Ann, Gloucester.

5/26/01 - The NMFS aerial team surveyed the southern portion and one trackline of the northern portion of the Great South Channel with 14 right whales observed (including 2 mother & calf pairs).

5/29/01 - The NMFS aerial team surveyed the northern portion of the Great South Channel before weather deteriorated. A total of 8 right whales was observed.
