CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

8/4/01 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME reported sighting a single adult right whale southeast of Mt. Desert Island.

8/8/01 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 2 right whales north of the northern edge of Georges Bank.

8/11/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 30 right whales east of Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy.

8/12/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 30 right whales east of Grand Manan Island and west of the outbound Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes.

8/13/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 10 right whales east of Grand Manan Island and in the vicinity of the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes.

8/14/01 - A commercial tanker reported sighting 4 right whales (including a mother and calf pair) in the vicinity of the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes.

8/15/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 50 right whales (including 10 mother & calf pairs) east of Grand Manan Island and in the vicinity of the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes. The tagged entangled right whale, #1102, is reported to be on the Northeast Peak of Georges Bank.

8/16/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 40 right whales east of Grand Manan Island and in the vicinity of the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes. The tagged entangled right whale, #1102, is reported to be on the Northeast Peak of Georges Bank.(CCS Map)

8/20/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 20 right whales east of Grand Manan Island and in the vicinity of the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes.The tagged entangled right whale,#1102, is reported to be on the southeast part of Georges Bank.

8/25/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) R/V Delaware II reported sighting 13 right whales southeast of Cape Sable, Nova Scotia & northeast of Browns Bank.

8/26/01 - The NMFS R/V Albatross IV reported 2 adult right whales southeast of Mt. Desert Island & northwest of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.The high speed ferry from Bar Harbor reported 6 right whales(possibly more) northwest of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The NMFS R/V Delaware II reported 10 right whales northeast of Browns Bank. The tagged entangled right whale, #1102, is now reported in the vicinity of Veatch Canyon, approximately 125 n.mi. SE of Montauk, NY. TOTAL RWs for day: 19.

8/27/01 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor reported sighting additional right whales on subsequent crossings today. A total of 13 or more right whales were sighted in the area NW of Yarmouth and SE of Bar Harbor.

8/28/01 - The tagged entangled right whale, #1102, is reported to be approximately 36 n. miles south of Martha's Vineyard and north of the New York Traffic Lanes. (Map)

8/29/01 - The National Marine Fisheries Service R/V Delaware II sighted 30 right whales east of Grand Manan Island & proximal to the Bay of Fundy Traffic Lanes. The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor reported 12 right whales northwest of Yarmouth and southeast of Bar Harbor. TOTAL RWs for the day: 42

8/30/01 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor reported 13 right whales including a mother & calf pair. An aerial survey conducted late 29 August in the area where the ferry had reported sighting right whales determined that there were approx.40-60 right whales in the area. Mariners are advised to proceed w/caution in this area of the Gulf of ME. The tagged entangled whale,#1102, is reported in the Great South Channel. Another attempt to disentangle the whale is in progress.

8/31/01 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor reported 4 right whales, including one juvenile. The tagged entangled right whale, #1102, is reported northeast of Wellfleet. The Center for Coastal Studies relocated the entangled whale and attempted dis-entanglement yesterday. The satellite tracking buoy was replaced.
