7/3/02 - A WHALE WATCH VESSEL SIGHTED 1 RIGHT WHALE 10 NM NORTHWEST OF PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, and A SHIPBOARD SURVEY SIGHTED 2 RIGHT WHALES, A MOTHER AND CALF, IN THE SHIPPING LANES, 10 NM NORTHWEST OF PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
7/6/02 - AN AERIAL SURVEY SIGHTED 6 RIGHT WHALES 65 NM EAST OF CHATHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
7/7/02 - AN AERIAL SURVEY SIGHTED 1 CALF AND 2 ADULT RIGHT WHALES 25 NM NORTH OF PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
7/11/02 - 1 RIGHT WHALE WAS SIGHTED 5 NM NORTHWEST OF BLOCK ISLAND, RHODE ISLAND.
7/12/02 - 10 RIGHT WHALES 55 NM EAST OF CHATHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, 1 RIGHT WHALE 40 NM EAST OF NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS, and 1 RIGHT WHALE 2 NM NORTHEAST OF LITTLE EGG INLET, NEW JERSEY.
Coast Guard received a report today, 12 July 2002, from a recreational boater of an entangled right whale approximately 15 nm east of Atlantic City, NJ. The whale has been confirmed as a right whale and is free swimming with gear attached. A team is enroute to the whale to assess the situation and possibly attempt disentanglement. Please advise all masters operating in the general area of the right whale's location: 39 23.1N 74 05.9W
7/15/02 - A satellite tag was placed on the entangled right whale last Friday. The whale has since traveled to off Kitty Hawk, NC about a mile offshore. The latest satellite coordinates are:36 21.2'N 75 44.8'W
Again,please pass this information to masters who may be operating in this general area and along the east coast.I have attached a picture of the whale in which you can see one line around the upper jaw and some of the broken baleen sticking out of the left side of the mouth.
