CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

2/28/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF conducted an aerial survey in Cape Cod Bay today. All tracklines were flown except for 3 northern tracks. A total of 6 right whales were reported sighted.

2/24/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 15 traclines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 1 mile off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. Nine right whales were sighted. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted a habitat survey in the Bay today and sighted 8 right whales. There may be some duplicate sightings between the 2 platforms. Total for day: 17 right whales.

2/23/99 - A marine mammal observer aboard a Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) vessel sighted a single right whale today in Cape Cod Bay off the Sandy neck area.

2/21/99 - A research vessel reported the sighting of a single right whale off the Long Branch/Asbury Park, New Jersey area today. The whale was sighted in the vicinity of the Ambrose to Barnegat Traffic Lands. Mariners are advised to proceed with caution in that area.

2/19/99 - The Coast Guard and Massachusetts Environmental Police reported the sighting of a single right whale off the Barnstable/Sandy neck area today.

2/17/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 15 traclines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 1 mile off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. Sea state condition was generally a four. A total of 6 right whales were sighted.

2/16/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF sighted 4 right whales during their survey of Cape Cod Bay yesterday.

The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF conducted an aerial survey in Cape Cod Bay today and all track lines were flown. The CCS ship Shearwater also conducted a Habitat Survey in Cape Cod Bay today. A total of 26 right whales were reported in the central portion of Cape Cod Bay. Two or three of the right whales may have been duplicate sightings.

The Coast Guard reported sighting 1 right whale 20-30 feet long in the vicinity of buoy 5 Fire Island Inlet, Long Island, NY. The right whale was swimming out to sea.

2/9/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies sighted three right whales today while conducting a habitat survey.

2/6/99 - The Coast Guard reported the sighting of a single right whale southwest of Nantucket today.

2/2/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF conducted an aerial survey flying 8 tracklines (8-15) today in Cape Cod Bay before weather deteriorated. They sighted 9 right whales. The CCS also conducted a habitat cruise today in the bay with 14 right whales sighted. TOTAL right whales for day: 23. NOTE- there may be some duplicate sightings in the total.

2/1/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF conducted an aerial survey today flying tracklines 1-15 in Cape Cod Bay then crossed the Cape at Chatham and flew up to Provincetown along the outer shore about 2 miles from the beach. A total of 14 right whales were sighted, one of which may have been a duplicate.

1/27/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF conducted an aerial survey and all track lines completed in Cape Cod Bay plus one along the eastern edge of Cape Cod. The CCS ship Shearwater was also in Cape Cod Bay surveying today. A total of 21 right whales were sighted in the central portion of Cape Cod Bay.

1/26/99 - The MA.Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) conducted an Aerial Survey in Cape Cod Bay today and all track lines were flown, A total of 8 right whales were sighted in the area of Barnstable Harbor and in central Cape Cod Bay. One right whale was reported to be entangled in the Barnstable Harbor area. CCS rescue crew were on the scene along with the Coast Guard.

01/22/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF have sighted 6 right whales during their aerial survey today in Cape Cod Bay. The whales were off the Monomet and Billingsgate Shoal areas. An update report will bw issued if additional whales are sighted during the remiander of the survey.
The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF surveyed Cape Cod Bay today. A total of three right whales were sighted in the Billingsgate Shoal area.

01/21/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and Ship Survey reported sighitng 7 right whales in Cape Cod Bay in the area of Barnstable Harbor and Billingsgate Shoal. The MA/Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) conducted Aerial and Ship Surveys in Cape Cod Bay today and reported sighting a total of 8 right whales in the area of Barnstable Herbor and Billingsgate Shoal.

01/17/99 - The Coast Gurad reported a sighting of 3-4 right whales off the Truro area today. The animals were heading in a northwesterly direction. The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) conducted a Habitat Survey in Cape Cod Bay today and reported sighting 12 right whales off the Truro area Today.

01/08/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 15 tracklines today and sighted 8 right whales in Cape Cod Bay.

01/06/99 - The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale off Provincetown today. The center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 14 tracklines (1-6;8-15) in Cape Cod Bay today with a sea state of 3-4. CCS/MA sighted six right whales in the Bay. Total right whales for the day (survey & opportunistic): 7
