CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

Reports:

4/29/99 - The NMFS reported sighting 3 right whales while condicting an Aerial Survey in the Gulf of Maine. Two right whales were sighted in the eastern portion of Stellwagen Bank (one of the whales was breaching) and 1 right whale was sighted in Cape Cod Bay off Manomet Point. A whale watch vessel also rported sighting a right whale just off shore from provincetown.

4/28/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 14 tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and a few lines up on Stellwagen Basin. Sea state conditions were beaufort 4 & 5. They sighted 2 right whales.

4/27/99 - The Coast Guard and MA Environmental Police (MEP) searched a section of Cape Cod Bay today attempting to locate a right whale that had been reported as entangled in gear. The entangled right whale was not located, but they did sight 4 right whales in the Bay, south of Billingsgate Shoal off Dennis/Brewster.

4/26/99 - The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) R/V Oceanus reported the sighting of a single right whale early this evening in the Great South Channel east of the Boston traffic lanes.

4/25/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. The CCS R/V Shearwater was conducting habitat studies in the Bay.
The NMFS harbor porpoise survey team reported sighting 8 right whales on the southern end of Platts Bank.

4/23/99 - A whale watch vessel out of Plymouth reported sighting 1 right whale on the southern end of Stellwagen Bank.

4/22/99 - The International Fund for Animal Welfare's R/V Song of the Whale sighted 3 right whales in cape Cod Bay while they were conducting right whale research studies. These right whales were skim feeding.

4/21/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 14 tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. They sighted 10 right whales. A whale watch vessel out of Plymouth reported sighting 1 right whale on the southern end of Stellwagen Bank.

4/20/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 14 tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. They sighted 15 right whales including the confirmed dead right whale off the Wellfleet area. The Coast Guard & MA Env. Police reported sighting approximately 25 right whales off Dennis earlier today. Total for Day: 27 (including floater)

4/19/99 - The CCS R/V and the Woods Hole Oceanographic/Int'l Wildlife Coalition vessel conducted right whale studies in Cape Cod Bay with a total of 10 right whales sighted. The NMFS harbor porpoise aerial survey did not have any right whale sightings off the New Hampshire area. A whale watch vessel reported sighting a single right whale off the northern part of Stellwagen Bank. Total for Day: 11.

4/18/99 - The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale east of the buoy off the east entrance of the Cape Cod Canal.

4/16/99 - The Coast Guard reported 2 right whales at the East entrance to the Cape Cod Canal. The Army Corp of Engineer's has shut down the Cape Cod Canal and the Coast Guard is standing by with the animals. NMFS conducted an aerial survey in the Gulf of maine and sighted 2 right whales in the southern portion of Stellwagen Bank in the Boston Traffic Lanes and 4 right whales in the southern portion of Portland's Traffic Lanes.

4/15/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay with 19 right whales sighted. The NMFS flew tracklines over Platts Bank with 14 right whales sighted (some dups of CCS). The CCS R/Vs Shearwater and Gannet conducted right whale studies on Stellwagen Bank & in the Bay with 6 right whales sighted. There may be some duplicate sightings among the platforms. Total for Day: 34.

4/14/99 - The NOAA twin Otter pilots sighted a single right whale off Provincetown today while doing a training flight.
The Coast Guard reported sighting approximately 10 right whales this evening on Platts Bank off Portland, Maine in a location between the two sets of Portland traffic lanes.

4/11/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 14 tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and an additional line about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. They sighted 16 right whales. The NMFA flew 2 complete lines and 2 partial lines in the Great South Channel with deteriorating conditions offshore. They sighted 8 right whales in the GSC. Total for Day: 24

4/9/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay plus 1 outside with 17 right whales sighted. The NMFS flew RI/LI lines 1-20 and SCOPEX lines 59-51 and had 1 right whale sighting. CCS ship conducted a habitat survey and reported sighting 3 right whales (1 possible duplicate of CCS aerial sighting). The Coast guard reported 1 right whale sighting in the area of Race Point. A total of 22 right whales were sighted today.

4/6/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay and a few additional lines on Stellwagen Bank with 24 right whales sighted. The NMFS flew about half of the RI/LI lines and 2 SCOPEX lines with 1 right whale sighted. The CCS R/V's did habitat and biopsy work on Stellwagen Bank and sighted 1 right whale (dup of aerial). The Stellwagen whale was also sighted by a MWRA observer on a survey vessel. Total for Day: 25

4/4/99 - A whale watch vessel reported a single right whale sighting on the northwest corner of Stellwagen Bank on 4 April.

4/3/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies (CS) research vessel and a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI)/International Wildlife Coalition (IWC) vessel were conducting habitat and tagging studies in Cape Cod Bay. They had sightings of 20 right whales. A whale watch vessel reported sighting 1 right whale on Stellwagen Bank. Total for Day: 21

4/2/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew all tracklines in Cape Cod Bay with 22 right whales sighted. The CCS R/V's and a WHOI/IWC vessel conducted habitat, biopsy, & tagging work in the Bay with 26 right whales sighted. Some of these CCB sightings may be duplicates. The NMFS surveyed 4 lines in the Great South Channel with 4 right whale sightings; the NMFS harbor porpoise survey had no right whales. TOTAL for Day: 52.

4/1/99 - The Center for Coastal Studies' R/V Shearwater and Gannet are surveying in Cape Cod Bay today. They have sighted 12 right whales in the eastern portion of the Bay. There are addition platforms out surveying in the Bay and in Great South Channel today; an Updated sighting report will be issued later today.
