CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

Reports:

7/14/99 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 2 right whales east of Nantucket in the area of the Great South Channel on the edge of the shipping lane.

7/13/99 - Map Only.

7/12/99 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME reported the sighting of a single right whale northwest of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

7/3/99 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting of a single right whale off the "Fingers" west of Jeffrey's ledge in the Gulf of Maine.

6/27/99 -The NMFS SAS team surveyed in the Great South Channel and on the northern edge of Georges Bank. Three right whales were sighted.

6/19/99 - The NMFS SAS team flew 4 extended lines in the Great South Channel with 2 right whales sighted. The two whales were sighted approximately 15 miles east of the critical habitat on the northern edge of Georges Bank.

6/18/99 - An entangled right whale waqs reported in today off of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia. Pending re-location of the whale, disentanglement may be attempted.

6/6/99 - The NMFS SAS team flew 6lines in the Great South Channel with 3 right whale sighted.

6/5/99 - NMFS reported sighting 2 right whales in the northern portion of Georges Bank. CCS sighted (while conducting training) a right whale entangled about 12 miles off shore between Digby Neck and Tiverton, Nova Scotia and Grand Manan Island. CCS, with the aid of Canadian Coast Guard, later reported they were able to untangle the right whale.

6/2/99 - The NMFS SAS team flew 2 tracklines in the Great South Channel this afternoon with haze and patchy fog limiting visibility. They sighted one right whale.
