Right Whale

REPORT: 12 February 1997

On 12 February 1997, collaborative right whale surveys were conducted both aerially (National Marine Fisheries Service, NMFS/Coast Guard, CG) and shipboard (Center for Coastal Studies, CCS). To evaluate the sightability of right whales from helicopter platform, the survey track was modified with the southern half of the middle 6 track lines flown twice. The CCS completed approximately the western half of their survey track lines and terminated the survey at 1 PM due to deteriorating sea conditions. This coordinated survey effort yielded useful sighting feedback to both groups.

NOTE: The complete NMFS/CG aerial and CCS ship survey tracks are enclosed in this [page] fax for information and reference purposes. Henceforth, a messages will detail the track lines completed that [given] day from the platform(s) providing sighting reports.
