NOAA/NMFS Right Whale Survey

REPORT:

The Center for Coastal Studies and MA/DMF flew 15 tracklines in Cape Cod Bay, a survey line approximately 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to P-town, and additional North/South survey lines in the Wildcat Knoll area. Two right whales sighted i cape Cod Bay. Coast Guard while on a search and rescue mission early this morning had sighted and reported one of those right whales in the same general area in cape Cod bay. The CCS R/V was out conducting habitat studies. The NMFS flew down off Block Island to verify right whale sighting reports that had been called in to NMFS. Reporting sources noted that right whales including a possible mother and calf pair had been resident in this area for several weeks. seven right whales were sighted in the vicinity of naragansetts bay & Buzzards bay traffic lans/southern precautionary area. The mother and calf pair were not observed on this survey. Mariners are advised to proceed with caution in this area.

CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES:
