NOAA/NMFS Right Whale Survey

REPORT:

The NMFS completed 6 tracklines between 71 and 72 degrees long. (three miles apart) off RI and eastern Long Island today. No right whales were observed. NMFS also flew part of 1 Great South Channel trackline. Six right whales were observed. Numerous humpback, fin, and minke whales were also observed feeding in the same area inside/proximal to the traffic lanes. The CCS/MA DMF flew 14 tracklines in the Cape Cod Bay and a line about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to P-town. No right whales were observed.

REPORT:

The Center for Coastal Studies and MA DMF flew tracklines in an area around Wildcat Knoll bounded to the north by 42 40, south 42 13, west 70 10 and east 69 37. One right whale was observed.

CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES:
