NOAA/NMFS Right Whale Survey

REPORT:

The Center for Coastal Studies flew tracklines along the northern edge of Georges Bank to the Northeast Peak/Georges basin area. Six right whales were observed. Two planes from the NMFS surveyed the southeast and southwest parts of georges Bank yielding no right whale sightings.

2 June, 1998

Yesterday morning (6/1/98) a Humpback whale (approximately 30 feet in length) transited the Cape Cod Canal from East to West. A US Army Corps of Engineers vessel observed and safely escorted the Humpback whale through the entire length of the canal and then out into Buzzards Bay.

NMFS surveyed 10-11 track lines today in the area of Cashes Ledge and Fippennies Ledge. There were no right whale sightings.

CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES:
